the persistent snake

snake.jpeg

in waking dreams,
a cloudy high road
cushioned, lounges
in faded beckoning.

an emperor,
dressed to dazzle.
spread like butter
across velvet chaise,
he taunts me
with grapes and feathers,
girls and greed.

his curling finger
snares me
like a scythe,
snips me at the bud.
white roots bulge,
soon to shrink
in temptation’s thirst.
