the stable

stable

the night falls
cold,
silent.
utter stillness,
broken only by beating hearts,
waiting,
anticipating.
all around, every eye is peeled,
every ear is tuned in,
every face is turned
towards
the tiny wooden hut.
through the panelled doorway,
a beam of light streams
onto the
frosted grass.
every sound
every move
every moment
every second in history
has led
to
this.

someone
inhales sharply.
gasps heavily –
and into the silence,
an infant’s cry
breaks the evening air.
hot tears,
heaven rejoices –
safe arrival,
safe arrival!
and with the
safe arrival
earth too
is now
safe.
