heaven’s song

they heard it in the clubs
beneath the pounding beat.
‘a King has come to save our souls!’
they whispered in the midnight street.

they heard on the ships
amid the bustling crew
‘a King has come to save our souls!’
they whispered in the dinner queue.

they heard it in the schools
above the children’s play.
‘a King has come to save our souls!’
they whispered at the end of day.

they heard it in the parks
across the bracing breeze
‘a King has come to save our souls!’
it rang amongst the willow trees.

they heard it on the mountain top
as they saw the curve of Earth.
‘a King has come to save our souls!’
‘it’s the day of the saviour’s birth!’

they sung it in the heavens
and dance and wept with joy
‘the King has come to save our souls!’
‘A tiny baby boy!’
